We use the turmeric powder to give rice dishes a yellow and colourful look - and this spice is the prominent part of curry mixtures. It is also called Indian saffron and was used as a substitute for this more expensive spice. Turmeric was also used as a dye for cloth and upon the skin - and still today the buddhistmonks' pretty yellow dresses are dyed with turmeric.

New research shows that the medical plant Turmeric is highly interesting. The content of the yellow dye, curcumin, is both a strong antibiotic and especially a strong painkiller. An Indian study has shown that 2 gram curcumin daily has the same painkilling effect as 400 mg ibuprofen. Turmeric's side effect is that it strengthens the liver and the immune system - which is a further benefit.

Interesting. I heard on a TV show only yesterday that this spice is good for heart health and blood sugar, too. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteI have seen gailardia petals for saffron, but really enjoy the spice as its own. I went to the Canary Islands in 1988 and got saffron for $30/OZ.I haven't used it for years because of the price, but yearn to taste it and always order anything a restruant fixes with saffron.
ReplyDeleteHej Maracas, it's so nice to see you.
ReplyDeleteYes, turmeric is a super spice!
If you use the raw turmeric then it dyes so much that you'll have to guard your kitchen table first!!

Hello Steve, I think that's why turmeric was used instead of saffron, because saffron is so expensive.

Great spice, plus yellow is such a lovely spring color, don't you think, Grethe?☺ Recently watched a sweet movie (Today's Special) about a chef cooking popular Indian curries with turmeric and other spices in his family's restaurant. They bought turmeric in bulk! I have a large jar of blended curry powder, cook with it often.
ReplyDeleteHej Wanda, yes the colour is like spring!! I saw something on TV which you mention, from an Indian cook and family, and they told us that Indian families have each their own curry mix. I have thought about making one myself, but I still have got the old blended curry powder!! I love curry dishes!
ReplyDeleteNow it is soon week-end again. Have a lovely week-end!
